Over 80 pupils from schools across the region attended Portsmouth Guildhall’s fourth Creative Choices Day, a day of workshops to inform young people about the range of careers available in the Creative economy, the UK’s fastest growing sector.
Year 9-11 pupils from Milton Cross, St John’s College and Mayville High School took part in sessions led by the Guildhall team on Front of House and Stage Management, working in live events with Ticketmaster International and a lighting workshop with White Light Ltd.
The free sessions gave pupils the opportunity to try out the different job roles for themselves and speak directly to experts in the industry who were able to share their entry routes, career paths and experiences with the students.
John Talbot, Artist Relations Development Manager for Ticketmaster International said, “‘Live events are a challenging and rewarding business to work in. Demand for live experiences is higher than ever before and that means a greater choice of careers opening up within the industry. It’s vital that students are encouraged to explore and think about the types of work that live music, sport and theatre can lead to and Creative Choices begins to highlight where those opportunities might be. Ticketmaster are delighted to be invited and given the opportunity to deliver a workshop that encourages the attendees to consider future employment in such an exciting sector.”
The day ended with a careers talk led by the Creative and Cultural Skills charity, the leading voice for youth employment within Britain’s creative and cultural industries, providing practical information, advice and resources for pupils wishing to make the leap from aspiration to employment.
Learning & Participation Manager for Portsmouth Guildhall, Hayley Reay said, “Our Creative Choices Day is growing each year with more schools and pupils wanting to be involved. We are delighted that we are able to offer these experiences, giving pupils access to some of our partners within the industry, and it is great to see young people eager and excited about their future careers”.
The Creative Choices day is part of the Guildhall’s wider Schools and Creative Skills Development programme, with a Careers Roadshow which visits students in their schools and work shadow opportunities also available.
