Mike & The Mechanics, who have sold over ten million records worldwide – announce their 2019 nationwide ‘Looking Back Over My Shoulder Tour’. An epic run of 34 UK concerts between February and April will see them in concert at the Portsmouth Guildhall on 30 March 2019. A Natural History of Deep Time is an exhibition that celebrates billions of years of evolution with a gallery of palaeoart: Scientifically-informed artistic recreations of extinct organisms and their world. The exhibition features the work of  Dr Mark Witton , a palaeoartist who works with universities, museums and media production teams around the world to produce scientifically-credible restorations of prehistoric life. The gallery will show the development of life from its microbial origins to the modern day, focusing on some of the most significant, spectacular and unusual species known from the fossil record. The University of Portsmouth music ensembles will perform at the New Theatre Royal on Saturday 19 May ahead of their Spanish tour. Every two years the music ensembles at the University of Portsmouth go on tour to a European country, performing four concerts in a variety of venues. This year they are visiting Figueres in Catalonia, Spain. Concerts are often full and our students enjoy the hospitality extended by locals. On one memorable occasion in Slovenia a local butcher held an impromptu barbecue for the 70 or so members because there was no restaurant in his village. On another occasion the choir performed to a huge crowd at the Zwickau Town Hall celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of the famous composer Schumann. Being part of such a momentous occasion certainly left an indelible memory on the students. Portsmouth Film Society (PFS) continues to deliver on its mission to help break down social barriers and unite diverse cultures with the premieres of four short films on 30 May at the New Theatre Royal, Portsmouth. Portsmouth citizens from all backgrounds have come together to tell their stories. Many people will be able to identify with the difficult subjects of these films; homelessness, substance misuse and recovery, disability and multiculturalism. Whether they have experience of these topics themselves, or only in passing, PFS hopes that projects like these will encourage discussion amongst their viewers. These short films are the result of a 20-week course held at the University of Portsmouth where participants were introduced to all aspects of film-making including script writing, casting, directing, filming and editing.
