Not just anyone can direct a show, let alone someone who admits that only three years ago she was so scared of auditioning for her BA (Hons) Musical Theatre degree course that she nearly didn’t go through with it.
The then twenty year old Bethan Roscoe sat at the coffee shop opposite the White Swan Building and contemplated telling her mum that she had failed. Luckily Bethan decided to brave it out and now she says coming to study at Portsmouth was the best decision she has ever made in her life.
Braving it out seems to have become her motto and at university Bethan began to branch out of her comfort zone to better herself. She has directed youth productions of Bugsy Malone and Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat back home and really enjoyed it. Directing the University of Portsmouth Dramatic and Musical Society’s annual show just felt like the next step.
If the shoe fits, then wear it! Bethan is very excited to bring her version of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella to life, especially on the stage of the New Theatre Royal. It’s a dream come true.
She admits that when she goes to the theatre her eyes are always drawn to members of the ensemble. She prefers looking at the bigger picture, but doesn’t see directing as being superior to her peers. She sees the whole process as a collaboration.
“I like to see what people come up with and then we work together to create something that all of us can be happy with.”
“I’ve been part of a few amateur dramatic shows where the director gets angry at the cast, but I feel that this is not productive and can knock the confidence of the performers when they are already taking part in something which makes them vulnerable.”
Bethan is determined to try to keep the atmosphere as fun, light and supportive as possible.
Her fellow students have all come from different backgrounds, with different experiences and she thinks that if she can harness everyone's strengths then they will have a really strong show.
So as the Fairy Godmother says, “In the name of every girl who has ever wanted to change the world she lived in, Bethan, go! With the promise of possibility!”
Cinderella will be performed at the New Theatre Royal from 28 February to 2 March, 7.30 pm each night and at 2.30 pm for the Saturday matinee. Tickets are available from the Box Office 023 9264 9000.
