Portsmouth students help promote City to cruise ship companies

Students from the Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries produced an innovative 360 degree video to promote Portsmouth’s world-class tourist attractions to some of the most important decision makers in the cruise ship industry at Europe’s premier cruise expo, Seatrade Europe.

The video gives viewers the chance to get an all-round impression of some of Portsmouth’s most famous attractions.


Portsmouth International Port is pushing for more cruise ship visits in the coming years and the video was part of a new #portsmouthtakesyouthere marketing campaign, highlighting a range of exceptional experiences offered in the City and on holidays from the port.

The new immersive 360 degree video has been produced with the University’s Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries, giving students the chance to promote key sights and landmarks in the City. The interactive marketing material gives viewers the chance to get an all-round impression of some of Portsmouth’s most famous attractions.

Toby Meredith, Media Production Manager at the University of Portsmouth, said, “It has been a great opportunity for both staff and students to work with Portsmouth International Port. 360 degree video is in its infancy and the project offered the chance to research different techniques and cameras whilst filming Portsmouth’s most iconic sites.”

Filmed using the latest camera technology, delegates watched the 360 degree videos using special headsets but they can also be seen on tablets and other mobile devices. The short film can be downloaded, giving viewers the chance to ‘pan around’ and explore Portsmouth’s attractions from wherever they are in the world.

Rupert Taylor, Harbour Master at Portsmouth International Port, said: “Portsmouth is a great port of call for visiting cruise ships. This new video showed some of the most influential people in the business just what guests can see within minutes of stepping off their ships. With so many attractions to choose from on the doorstep at Portsmouth International Port, it was a tough decision which ones to feature.”

Viewers might choose a 360 degree perspective from the top of the Emirates Spinnaker Tower, with outstanding views of Portsmouth Harbour and The Solent. With the ability to look up, down and all around there’s even a chance to see through the glass panel in the floor of the 100 metre high viewing deck. There is another video shot from the base of the iconic landmark, showing the sail like structure in all its glory on the waterfront.

Other immersive images feature the Historic Dockyard, with a chance to view HMS Warrior, HMS Victory and the Mary Rose Museum. With many cruise passengers keen to combine shopping and dining, a 360 degree video of Gunwharf Quays has also been produced. Delegates also got a view of the stunning passenger terminal at Portsmouth International Port, with its dedicated cruise facilities.

‘Southsea dinosaur’ returns

Luna Park 2021, an eagerly anticipated new public artwork for Portsmouth designed by internationally renowned artists Ivan Morison and Heather Peak of Studio Morison will be launched on 2 October 2021 on a celebratory day in Southsea Common.  The 1.4 metres bronze sculpture is a tribute to the original 53-foot high 2010 artwork Luna Park, which tragically burned down on Southsea Common. The artists will unveil a new sculpture that responds to ten years of public demand to ‘bring back the Southsea Dinosaur’.  The new public artwork will be located within a direct sightline to the position of the original Luna Park sculpture. It will sit on top of a fossil Portland stone plinth with a QR code which when scanned with a smartphone will connect to an Augmented Reality experience. Indonesian fried spring rolls (Lumpia Goreng)

I don't often make Indonesian food because the ingredients are hard to find, but our local supermarkets are getting better at stocking ethnic ingredients. In the frozen section of Tesco, near the samosas, you can find the spring roll pastry.  Don't bother asking the branch in Chester. I was laughed at by the cashier when I asked for spring roll skin, because 'skin' is what we call the wrapper in Indonesian. Her more helpful colleague offered me filo pastry instead, which can be a good substitute. I'm afraid no one in Chester has yet to taste my amazing spring rolls as a result.
