British Science Week will be celebrated across the UK from Friday 8 to Sunday 17 March and not least in Portsmouth. There are activities sponsored by the British Science Association Portsmouth and Isle of Wight Branch of which I am a volunteer.
Catch artist Immy Smith and her sciart at the aspex gallery Family Saturdays on 9 March from 11am until 1pm. The unique workshop is led by local artists Bethia Wentworth and Jordan Baines and it’s free.

On Wednesday 13 March, one the Thai boys rescue divers will be in Portsmouth to talk about his experience. Jason Mallinson is also an alumnus of the University of Portsmouth. This free event is held at the King’s Theatre, 6pm. For your ticket, go to port.ac.uk/events
Join the Skeptics in the Pub at The Rifle Club in Fratton on 14 March at 7pm. James Williams, Lecturer in Education at University of Sussex will talk about Alfred Wallace who famously sent Charles Darwin an outline of the theory of evolution by natural selection before Darwin had completed his major treatise on the subject. This prompted the publication of ‘Origin of Species’. So did Darwin steal Wallace’s idea? Find out more on Meetup.com
Also on 14 March, come along to a special talk by Professor Eleanor Schofield, Head of Conservation & Collections Care at the Mary Rose Trust, and get behind the scenes at the crucial scientific work that takes place to understand, and ultimately care for, and protect this prized collection. This free event is at the aspex gallery, 6-8pm.
Catch the last show of In the Willows at the New Theatre Royal or Grease at the King’s Theatre on Saturday 9 March. The advantage of living in a two-theatre city!
On Sunday 10 March, Hotwalls Studios invite you to Meet the Maker Talks in the Round Tower, from 2 to 4pm. Or you can Pimp Your Car at a workshop on aspex gallery.
Stiff Little Finger perform at the Pyramids Centre on 23 March. Formed in 1977 in Belfast, the band was at the forefront of the punk movement along with the likes of The Clash, Sex Pistols, and The Jam. Tickets from 02393 200330.
Trio Isimsiz will be in concert at the Guildhall on 25 March, 7.30pm. They perform Mozart’s delightful first piano trio, Fauré’s last works, and Beethoven’s Op. 70 No. 2.
