Portsmouth will be the focal point of the UK commemorations for D-Day 75. There will be a host of events taking place from 5 to 9 June, including the UK’s national event on 5 June - being organised by the Ministry of Defence on behalf of HM Government and in association with the Royal British Legion. The day will begin with a major national commemorative event on Southsea Common, for which heads of state from around the world have been invited. Hundreds of veterans will also be in attendance, before they head off to cross the Channel for Normandy once again. Due to the nature of this event and the invited guests, security will be high and large areas of Southsea Common will be closed to the public. However, the events will be shown live on BBC, with large screens set up for those who want to make their way down in person. Members of the Southsea Coastal Scheme team, who are designing new sea defences for 4.5km of Portsmouth's seafront have gone that extra mile to raise money for The LifeHouse , a resource and support centre for those in need, located in Albert Road, Southsea. To raise funds, employees from Portsmouth City Council , Eastern Solent Coastal Partnership and Balfour Beatty came together to take part in the Great South Run in October this year. The more experienced runners covered the 10 mile course, with the rest running in the 5K race meaning that runners of all levels could get involved. They have now smashed their fundraising target of £450, with the current total reaching over £600. Students from the Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries produced an innovative 360 degree video to promote Portsmouth’s world-class tourist attractions to some of the most important decision makers in the cruise ship industry at Europe’s premier cruise expo, Seatrade Europe . The video gives viewers the chance to get an all-round impression of some of Portsmouth’s most famous attractions. Portsmouth International Port is pushing for more cruise ship visits in the coming years and the video was part of a new #portsmouthtakesyouthere marketing campaign, highlighting a range of exceptional experiences offered in the City and on holidays from the port. The new immersive 360 degree video has been produced with the University’s Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industries, giving students the chance to promote key sights and landmarks in the City.
