Award-winning pianist Steven Osborne will be in concert at Portsmouth Guildhall on Monday 5 November. Steven is one of the most highly regarded pianists in the world. His numerous awards include The Royal Philharmonic Society Instrumentalist of the Year (2013) and two Gramophone Awards. You can learn more about Steven from his blog where he has reflected on why people go to concerts and reminisced about attending a concert that his wife, who is also a musician, took part in. The responses to his blog post offered different motivations to why people attend concerts: One audience member said, “It’s about the experience and emotion connected to music. You lose yourself, it's overwhelming & uplifting.” A mother brought her 7 and 12 year-old boys to a concert to show them that there is a new world where beautiful music exists. Acclaimed pianist and composer Steve Christie – the pianist for The Spitfire Sisters – will be performing a unique participative piano recital to help raise money for The Spring in Havant to purchase a new grand piano! In this interactive show, Steve will take audience requests for songs that he will perform in an astounding medley. In a new venture for The Spring, part of this recital will also be broadcast live on social media.  Steve has previously given interactive performances featuring themes such as The Beatles, TV Theme Tunes, 80s Hits, Kate Bush, Jazz Standards and Elvis Costello! The new season of Portsmouth Chamber Music series kicks off on 25 September with the incomparable pianist Paul Lewis. Lewis has a busy international career, appearing in concert halls around the globe. He is renowned for his performances of the Viennese masters, and we will be treated to favourite works by Beethoven, Haydn and Brahms. Then on the 30 October, we welcome back the Van Kuijk Quartet which so captivated the Portsmouth audience last season. First prize winners of the Wigmore Hall String Quartet Competition in 2015 they will perform string quartets by Mendelssohn, Janáček and Ravel. Violinist Tamsin Waley-Cohen has been touring the great UK and European concert halls last year as part of the ECHO Rising Stars series. Her partnership with star accompanist James Baillieu sees a programme of Schubert and Prokofiev sonatas sandwiched between works by C.P.E. Bach in their 27 November concert.
