Enterprising students from across three Portsmouth schools have been given the task of designing, developing and launching a tourism gift product as part of Made in Portsmouth, a programme aimed to inspire students about careers within the property and retail industries. The programme was launched on the 1st February 2018, in partnership with Landsec and The Ahead Partnership. It will see a team of Year 10 students from three schools across the city are to compete to create a unique product to go on sale to the general public in the summer. The students will be paired up with a coach from the Gunwharf Quays’ Management team to guide and mentor them through the development stage. Students will gain insight into the range of careers available whilst developing an understanding of business plans and marketing strategies. Portsmouth Guildhall offers advice and support to young people considering career opportunities in the creative economy at its most successful Creative Choices Day yet. Over 80 pupils from schools across the region attended Portsmouth Guildhall’s fourth Creative Choices Day, a day of workshops to inform young people about the range of careers available in the Creative economy, the UK’s fastest growing sector. Year 9-11 pupils from Milton Cross, St John’s College and Mayville High School took part in sessions led by the Guildhall team on Front of House and Stage Management, working in live events with Ticketmaster International and a lighting workshop with White Light Ltd. The free sessions gave pupils the opportunity to try out the different job roles for themselves and speak directly to experts in the industry who were able to share their entry routes, career paths and experiences with the students. TV historian Saul David comes to The Spring The Spring Arts and Heritage Centre is delighted to welcome Professor Saul David to speak about his latest book, Operation Thunderbolt. It’s now 40 years since the daring rescue of the hostages trapped on Air France flight 139, which was forced to land at Entebbe in Uganda – then under the dictatorship of Idi Amin. The Israeli military mounted a complex but ultimately successful operation to free the hostages, who numbered more than 100. Saul David is a historian, broadcaster and critically-acclaimed writer. Born in Monmouth, he began his education at a tiny school where half of the pupils were his cousins. He traces the start of his love of history to a teacher at his second primary school, and then to sixth-form teaching at Ampleforth College. He began writing his first history book at the age of 25.
