Portsmouth Green Film Festival

Portsmouth Film Society has announced its 5th Green Film Festival programme which will take place on 22 to 24 May in the Eldon Building, University of Portsmouth. Part of a worldwide movement to highlight environmental issues through film, festival organisers have selected three films that touched different aspects of our world. The festival launches with the screening of Embrace, a film that tackles the global issue of body image and screened with the support of the Faculty of Creative and Cultural Industry which is concerned with the impact the related fashion industry has on the overall wellbeing issue. Is there something we can do to ensure the survival of important food plants? The film Seed follows passionate seed keepers who are keen to ensure the survival of our food varieties. Before the screening, people can also hear a short talk by Dr Rocio Perez-Barrales, senior lecturer in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Portsmouth. Tackling hard issues isn’t al...

What's On in May

Here's a copy of my article that appears in this month's Portsmouth View: Thinking of May always brings up images of the Maypole and country fete. St Mary’s Church May Fayre is one of my favourites. May is a good time to check out the farmers market offering local produce in abundance. In Southsea we are fortunate to have the monthly market on Palmerston Road. The farmers markets are complimented by the Love Southsea Markets which features many local crafts and artists. Have you tried a bar of ‘lemon soul’ soap by Southsea Bathing Hut? When the farmers market is not here, visit the Southsea Greenhouse located near Canoe Lake. It is a community garden built on a piece of derelict land. You can volunteer to do gardening activities such as planting, digging or pottering. You can also donate or barter produce from your garden with the Southsea Greenhouse. As the weather becomes warmer, it is also a good month for enjoying the many cafes in Southsea. Sit back, relax,...

Delicious Szechuan Liver

It's so delicious and I love it so much. Here's the recipe for 2 people: Ingredients: 250-300 grams lamb's liver 1.5 tablespoons soy sauce 3 teaspoons cornflour 2 tablespoon sherry 1 teaspoon sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 clove of garlic crushed 2 cm of ginger, chopped a bunch of spring onions a small can of bamboo shoots 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 teaspoon of sesame oil Slice the liver to about 1 cm thickness and 3 cm length. Mix with the cornflour and add sugar, salt, soy sauce, sherry and ginger and let it marinade. In the mean time cut the green onions to about 3 cm long. Heat the oil in a wok or cooking pan, add the onion and bamboo shoots and cook for about 5 minutes. Then add the garlic and the pieces of lamb. Stir fry for about 5 minutes. Add a tablespoonful of water into the pan and...
